The peculiarities of the famous Stepped Gable and Snail Gable are best appreciated from this perspective.

Am Sande Square was unpaved in the Middle Ages, and thus 'sandy'. Merchants used to park their horse-drawn and ox-drawn carts there and would buy and sell their wares. Often, when one of Lüneburg's many town festivals is on, special use is made of this town's square's unique atmosphere. It is flanked by St. John's Church to the east.

Opposite St. John's Church stands one of the most imposing buildings on the square - which now houses the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK).
